Exterior Detailing Products for MAXIMUM Efficiency

(Masterclass to Save Time, Cut Costs, and Increase Profits)

If you’re in the detailing business and still following every trending “must-have” product online, let me stop you right there. You’re likely wasting time, money, and energy chasing products that don’t actually improve your bottom line.

In this masterclass, I’m going to share how I cut our product costs by 72%, saved over $500 a month, and simultaneously positioned my business to charge over $150 an hour for detailing services. These aren’t tricks—they’re practical, step-by-step processes designed to make your exterior detailing more efficient, consistent, and profitable.

By the end of this guide, you’ll understand how to simplify your workflow, streamline product usage, and focus on what truly matters: running a business that grows while minimizing waste.

Step 1: Rinseless Wash – The Foundation of Efficiency

The first step in my exterior detailing process is DIY Detail Rinseless Wash.

I know, it sounds simple—but efficiency starts with simplicity. Let me break it down:

  • Buckets and Dilution: I take four capfuls of rinseless wash and mix them into four gallons of water—roughly two ounces per four gallons.
  • Why Rinseless Wash?
    1. Safer on paint than traditional soap.
    2. Faster cleanup process—less water, less scrubbing, less stress.

We always begin with a pre-foam and rinse, but after that, the wash itself doesn’t require a full rinse. This allows us to apply soap, ceramic sealant, and dry each panel without touching it again—saving 10–15 minutes per car, easily.

For larger vehicles, like SUVs or full-size trucks, this step alone can cut your exterior washing time down to 25 minutes or less, compared to over an hour with traditional methods.

Step 2: Wheels & Tires Come First

One of the biggest mistakes detailers make is washing the car before the wheels. Here’s why:

  • Wheels and tires are the dirtiest parts of the car.
  • If you wash the body first, you risk splashing grime and brake dust back onto clean surfaces.

Here’s the process I use:

  1. DIY Detail All Clean (APC):
    • Dilution: 15 parts water, 1 part product in my foamer.
    • Spray on tires and rims, agitate with a brush, and rinse off.
  2. Quick Beads Graphene Sealant:
    • This water-activated sealant is sprayed onto rims before the wash.
    • Protects the rims, prevents water spots, and makes drying faster and easier.

Step 3: Foam Cannon & Soap – Maximum Clean With Minimum Product

For the main body of the car, I use a foam cannon filled with water and just one ounce of DIY Detail Incredible Suds.

Why this works:

  • High foam, low product: Saves money while providing maximum cleaning efficiency.
  • Pre-lift dirt: Even though we’re using rinseless wash, the foam begins to loosen grime before contact, reducing the risk of scratching paint.
  • Agitation access: A detail brush can now easily reach crevices and hard-to-reach spots, adding that extra touch of perfection.

This is the magic of efficiency + quality—you’re not overcomplicating the process or wasting product.

Step 4: Two-Bucket Rinseless Wash Technique

The two-bucket system is essential:

  • Bucket 1: Rinseless wash solution
  • Bucket 2: Plain water for rinsing the mitt

Process:

  1. Start at the roof, working your way down.
  2. Dunk the mitt in the clean water bucket, rub against the dirt trap at the bottom, and remove accumulated debris.
  3. Apply rinseless wash gently, panel by panel.

Once a panel is cleaned, apply a ceramic gloss spray (also a drying aid). One or two sprays per panel will:

  • Protect the paint for 3–6 months
  • Accelerate drying
  • Minimize water spots

Then simply grab a drying towel—no additional touching needed. Done.

Step 5: Tire Dressing and Rim Finishing

Once the car is washed and dried, finish with:

  • Griot’s Ceramic Tire Dressing:
    • Provides a perfect blend of gloss and matte finish
    • Lasts 3–6 months
    • Ideal for premium customer service

Alternative options: DIY Detail Tire Dressing or PNS Products. I’ve tested all, but Griot’s remains my favorite for high-end detailing.

Even a basic wash on a large vehicle using this process can be performed in under 30 minutes, while still charging $85+ for a service—giving you a profitable hourly rate.

Step 6: Stop Chasing New Products – Focus on Business

Here’s the #1 mistake detailers make:

  • Over-focusing on products or techniques
  • Buying every new spray, soap, or brush that comes out
  • Ignoring the bigger picture: growing your business

I know detailers with 15–20 years of experience who still haven’t crossed $10,000/month. Why? Because they obsess over trade tools instead of business systems.

The truth is simple:

  • Pick products that work
  • Stick to them consistently
  • Focus your energy on marketing, sales, and efficiency

If your workflow is simple, repeatable, and cost-effective, the profit and scalability will naturally follow.

Step 7: What’s Next?

After mastering exterior detailing:

  • Interior detailing
  • Clay treatment and trim restoration
  • Headlight polishing
  • Paint correction and ceramic coating

All these services can be simplified and systematized. The key is efficiency, not complexity. This Range Rover we’re working on, for example, has major paint imperfections. With the right process, restoring and protecting it is simpler than most think.

Key Takeaways: Maximize Efficiency, Profit, and Time

  1. Rinseless wash + foam cannon = faster, safer washes
  2. Wheels first, then body
  3. Ceramic gloss and quick beads protect surfaces while drying
  4. Two-bucket system = no cross-contamination
  5. High-quality tire dressing = minimal rework
  6. Consistency > constant product-hopping

Efficiency isn’t just a time-saver—it’s a profit multiplier. Cut costs, save time, charge more per hour, and focus on growing your detailing business.

Next Steps:

  • Master your exterior process first
  • Then move to interiors, paint correction, and ceramic coating
  • Systematize every step
  • Focus on customer satisfaction and revenue growth, not product obsession

Efficiency is the difference between a hobby business and a six-figure detailing business. Get it right, and everything else falls into place.
